Forensic Science

Mission

The certificate in Forensic Science is designed to create quality educational experiences in forensic science and to prepare skilled professionals ready to enter the workforce. The core principles of scientific inquiry and ethics serve to integrate coursework throughout the curriculum.

Program-Level Student Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

Students earning an undergraduate certificate in forensic science will be able to:

  1. Apply the scientific method in laboratory and simulated forensic scenarios to solve problems in an ethical manner.
  2. Communicate the results of forensic analyses within the context of Franciscan values.
  3. Execute basic techniques and analyses used at crime scenes or in crime laboratories.

Admissions Requirements

  • Enrollment in or completion of a baccalaureate or advanced degree in a chemical science, physical science, biological science, or forensic science is recommended.
  • Students may transfer up to 12 hours in biology or chemistry towards this certificate. The remaining 12 – 13 hours must be taken at Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University.
  • Employment in a field related to forensic science requires an extensive background check. Components of this check may include any or all of the following: polygraph tests, credit checks, drug tests, interviews of family, friends, and professional acquaintances.
  • Questions regarding this consideration should be directed towards the lab or agency in which they intend to seek future employment.

After completing the initial 6 hours of biology and 6 hours of organic chemistry, students should be able to complete the remaining requirements within 1 year.

BIOL 3385 and either CHEM 2410 or CHEM 3320 should be taken in one semester. CHEM 4350 and one other elective can be taken in the next semester.
