PHAS 5762 Psychosocial Dynamics in Healthcare
The first block of the course will provide the student with student with practical medical knowledge in identifying, evaluating, managing and appropriately referring patients presenting with common psychiatric conditions. This course exposes students to the methods utilized for diagnosis and management of the patient with psychiatric based medical problems as well as various treatment regimens available to those patients. Students enlarge their knowledge base, skills and learn the indications for referral. They gain an appreciation for the contributions of PAs as well as other health care providers in the evaluation, management, and treatment of the patient with psychiatric based medical problems.The second block will introduce students to a variety of topics in health humanities including social determinants of health, all of which have a profound impact on the practice of medicine and patient outcomes. Students should gain a keen appreciation for the human, social, and spiritual complexities of providing care to diverse populations with complex medical needs. This block is designed to provide students with tools to help them become reflective, self-aware, and compassionate medical practitioners.
