BIOL 3345 Microscopic Anatomy
This course is offered during the spring semester. This course will thoroughly investigate and analyze the light and electron microscopic structure of the cells and tissues that comprise the organs of the human body. All lectures will discuss light microscopic histology, ultrastructure and molecular structure of human cells and tissues. Functional and structural specializations will be described and discussed in detail. Changes in cell structure related to disease processes, i.e., cellular pathology of histopathology, will also be described. Organs and systems to be covered include the following: the cardiovascular system: the heart, arteries, veins and capillaries; the brain and spinal cord: myelinated and non-myelinated nerves; the endocrine system: the adenohypophysis, the neurohypophysis, the pineal gland, the thyroid and parathyroid glands, the islets of Langerhans; the adrenal medulla and the adrenal cortex; the digestive system: stomach, small intestine, large intestine; salivary glands, liver, gall bladder; the respiratory system: bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, respiratory membrane; the urinary system: kidneys, glomeruli and nephrons; and the male and female reproductive systems: ovaries, testes, various ducts, etc.
